The World At War

The whole series is being shown on Yesterday (channel 155), Friday nights at 10pm.
Still one of the best TV programmes I’ve ever seen.

Great theme music and Sir Larry Olivier voiceover. Couldn't go wrong. I see from tomorrow night's episode we've missed the first 12 episodes though, but thanks for the tip off, Mercecnary.

On Demand is what you need Terry!
That tune takes me right back to when I first watched it as a young boy, all wide-eyed with wonder at the sheer scale and horror of it all...

An absolute gem of an informative account of what happened. Probably the best documentary of all time. Will tape it again The Mercernary. Nice one.

It's the greatest doc ever, but FMOBs it's depressing. Watched it several times, they always used to show it in January, you know when there's a blizzard raging outside and your car won't start and your credit card statement just dropped on the door mat, then you turn on the news to hear the Samaritans reaching out as the suicide rates have reached a record high.

Alf once made a most sad and poignant post on here about how he remembers seeing his dad watching this with tears in in eyes.
Terrible memories for the old soldier

Without doubt the single most important document of the single most important event in human history. It far surpasses what could be considered a documentary. It is a piece of history that if the human race survives another 100,000 years will still be a cornerstone of how we understand ourselves.

`Down this road on a summer day in 1944, the soldiers came. Nobody lives here now. They stayed only a few hours. When they had gone, the community, which had lived for a thousand years, was dead. This is Oradour-sur-Glane, in France. The day the soldiers came, the people were gathered together. The men were taken to garages and barns, the women and children were led down this road, and they were driven into this church. Here, they heard the firing as their men were shot. Then they were killed too. A few weeks later, many of those who had done the killing were themselves dead, in battle. They never rebuilt Oradour. Its ruins are a memorial. Its martyrdom stands for thousands upon thousands of other martyrdoms in Poland, in Russia, in Burma, China, in a World at War...`

It was made when the participants in the War were still alive and shows first hand accounts of their experiences which makes it all the more profound

I have a huge interest in WW2 and have read loads of books. This started back as a kid reading Victor comic and the small mini war comics.
But a couple of years ago a fella I work with went to France on holiday and he travelled around. On talking to him (and him knowing I am a bit of a WW2 buff) he said one place he visited was Oradour-sur-Glane. I asked him if it was nice and he said "Well, no not really, but eye opening". I looked confused and he said have you not heard of it. I said I hadn't.
He said that he wouldn't say anymore and would bring me in a book that he bought there telling the full and whole story.
Needless to say I have now heard of Oradour-sur-Glane and will never, ever for the rest of my life forget it and one day hope to go there.
